Going forward, the Railways would be the “most cost-efficient” mode of transportation for the automobile industry, in particular car makers, according to Shekar Viswanathan, vice-chairman and whole-time director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day conference on outsourcing organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Tuesday. Tie-ups with roadway authorities and the Railways will be crucial when the industry takes the path where higher growth milestones are projected, he said.

According to an estimate, the annual production of four-wheelers in the country, which is around 3.5 million units at present, is set to touch 10 million over the years on the back of improved GDP growth, better roads and infrastructure. With more vehicles required to be shipped across the length and breadth of the country, the Railways would be the most cost efficient mode, Mr. Viswanathan said. The first ‘Smart Outsource Expo & Summit’ is being organised by CII to help businesses think about how they can leverage partnerships and external expertise to enhance their capabilities, improve profitability as well as products and services.

Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director of Industries and Commerce M. Maheshwar Rao said that specialised outsourcing services would allow organisations to focus on their core business and thereby increase revenue and bottomline.

Sandeep K. Maini, director, Maini Precision Products, said that a change in mindset was necessary for the micro, small and medium enterprises to adopt outsourcing.

Chairman of the event Pramod Bhasin said that outsourcing infuses a thought process on how to work effectively and in collaboration with experts from around the world.
