Campaign in Belagavi to enrol school dropouts

February 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - BELAGAVI:

Despite enactment of the Right to Education Act which guarantees free and compulsory elementary education for children in the 6-14 age group, there are still many school dropouts in the district.

Many of them, who had to quit or left the school for various reasons, belong to the economically weaker sections of society.

According to official sources in the Department of Public Instruction here on Tuesday, 2,808 children had been identified as school dropouts in the district and the department recently launched a special campaign to enrol them in schools for the academic year 2014-15. However, the sources said 654 school dropouts could not be enrolled for various reasons. Of them, 101 are from Bailhongal, 100 from Belagavi city, seven from Belagavi Rural, 90 from Khanapur, 211 from Ramdurg and 141 from Savadatti. Efforts were on to enrol them by the end of this month.
