The results of the high-voltage electoral battles for Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly segments, scheduled for April 9, are not a referendum on the Siddaramaiah-led State Congress government, former External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said at Maddur on Sunday.

Mr. Krishna, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was given a rousing welcome by BJP workers and supporters at Maddur.

Mr. Krishna addressed presspersons for a while at a coffee shop on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway near Somanahalli on the outskirts of Maddur. He expressed confidence of the BJP candidates winning the two bypolls, as according to him, the “State is observing a BJP wave.”

Reacting to a question, Mr. Krishna said he has not met the former MP, Ramya, since the last two years and hence does not know whether the actor-turned-politician will join the BJP or not.

He said he was greatly inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and his work and policies pertaining to the development of the country.

“I do not have any expectations from the party and my aim is to strengthen the BJP,” the former Chief Minister said. He announced that he would join the party’s campaign trails at Nanjangud and Gundlupet from Monday.

“All my supporters, who trust the BJP and me, will join the party,” he said.
