The budgetary allocation for education need to be enhanced to a minimum of 10 % of the total budget to ensure quality education to all, especially women, said All India Mahila Samskrutik Sanghatan (AIMSS) State vice-president M.N. Manjula.
Addressing a rally organised in connection with the 125th death anniversary of the reformist and educationist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar here on Tuesday, Ms. Manjula said that the government was spending less than 3 % of the total budget allocation, for the education sector. As a result, the progress achieved in the case of women education stands unimpressive. Of the total woman population, only 30 % is literate and only one per cent has access to higher education. More focus needs to be given for the promotion of woman education and strengthening government educational institutions to ensure quality education to students from the downtrodden sections, she said.
Recalling the services of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar to society, she said that he had raised his voice against deprivation among women as far as education was concerned. Despite stiff opposition from a orthodox society, he showed rare courage to open the doors of educational institutions to women and gradually changing the very psyche of society. Striving for fulfilling his dreams of total woman education would be a befitting tribute to a great soul of India, she added. AIMSS city unit president Vijayalakshmi Devatkal, district president Bhuvana, vice-president Madhulata Goudar and others spoke. AIMSS members took out a procession and later formed a human chain near the Jubilee Circle.
