C.V. Sneha, Deputy Secretary, Mandya Zilla Panchayat (ZP), has requested alcohol addicts to try and curb the habit. She was speaking after inaugurating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday.

Ms. Sneha explained the ill effects of addiction to alcohol and drugs to the gathering. Anyone could get addicted to alcohol, she said, adding that once addicted, breaking the habit that gradually sets in is extremely difficult.

She gave examples of the hundreds of people, including some farmers, who had committed suicide as a result of alcoholism.

A few de-addicted people were honoured on the occasion. They received mementos. Mandya District AYUSH (Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy) officer Dr. Seethalakshmi, Women and Child Welfare Officer S. Diwakar, District Kannada Sahithya Parishat president C.K. Ravikumar and others were present.

Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Dhwani, a non-governmental organisation, had organised the programme.
