Karnataka : Bengaluru 25/09/2017 A college student drowns in a temple kalyani in Ramagodlu . The deceased has been identified as Vishwas, a student of National College, . The incident has been captured in a selfie taken by his classmates, though they were unaware of it.

A swim in a temple pond as part of a two-day college trekking trip ended in tragedy for a 17-year-old PU college student when he drowned in the pond, a few metres away from the shore where his friends were playing. The deceased has been identified as G. Vishwas, a student of National College in Jayanagar.

Vishwas was part of a team of around 21 students who had visited Ravagudlu, in Kanakpura, in the outskirts of the city on Saturday for a trekking trip, and were expected to return to the city on Sunday evening. They were accompanied by their National Cadet Corps (NCC) coordinator Girish.

The group stayed at the Gunda Anjaneya temple on Saturday night and went trekking on Sunday morning. Upon returning, several students got into the pond and Vishwas accompanied them, but he decided to go in deeper. A group selfie taken by the students shows Vishwas drowning in the background; his friends unaware of his struggle to stay afloat.

The incident came to light after his friends started searching for him after going through their pictures and noticed he was missing. After informing their coordinator, they went back to the pond and found his body floating.

The Kaggalipura police retrieved the body and shifted it to a hospital in Bengaluru for post-mortem. Vishwas’s father, Govindaiah, an auto driver, filed a complaint with the police in which he alleged that the college did not inform him about the incident and that he learned about it from Vishwas’ friends.

On Monday, the parents brought the body to National College and protested against the authorities for their alleged negligence in handling the situation. The coordinator, Girish, also could not be traced by the police despite being summoned to the station to record his statement.

The Kaggalipura police are investigating the case and are expected to speak to college officials as well as Girish.
