Blame game on falling balustrades

July 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - MYSURU:

Balustrades put up as part of the Raja Marga Project in areas around the iconic Mysuru Palace and along the procession route, have collapsed on several occasions in the past, displeasing the residents.

However, the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) on Friday claimed that the collapse of balustrades was due to collision of vehicles and not because of trashy work.

“Four such incidents had taken place and vehicle crashing – hitting by either buses or cars – is the cause,” MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath said. Arguing that the balustrades had remained undamaged around the K.R. Circle, he said the traditional-style stone pillars along the road had given away in some places when vehicles had inadvertently hit them.

However, recently when the balustrades along the footpath at Chamaraja Circle in front of the Mysore Palace had collapsed, Mayor R. Lingappa had said that it was the handiwork of vandals.

The Mayor’s attribution contradicts the Commissioner’s assertion. Mr. Lingappa had also said that he would direct the police to ensure miscreants do not cause any damage in future to the work. The collapsed balustrades were later repaired.

Why can the MCC not ask for footages of surveillance cameras put up at the K.R. Circle and Sayyaji Rao Road to ascertain whether miscreants were behind the vandalism?

While the MCC Commissioner blames collision from vehicles, Mayor says vandals are responsible
