Multiple BJP leaders accused the Congress government of ruining Bengaluru’s image and pitched BJP as its saviour who would return the city to its past glory. “The city once known as a garden city is now reduced to a garbage city. Today it is a pothole city. The lakes are on fire and even grants from the Union government were not used,” alleged Union HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar.

“We have a smart Prime Minister. But Karnataka has a slow motion Chief Minister,” he said.

BJP State president B S Yeddyurappa said “Silicon City has now become a rape city.” Union Minister and Bengaluru South MP, Ananth Kumar, said while the Union government had released ₹100 crore funds for the ‘smart city’ project for Bengaluru, the State government had not used it.

'No use for smart city tag'

“This is the case with the ‘smart city mission’ in other cities in Karnataka too. During the Vajpayee regime, we got the international airport and metro to the city. This time we got the smart city tag, but to no use,” he said, adding while Congress tried to divide the city into three thrice, they stopped it.
