The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bolstered by the Karnataka Janata Paksha move to merge with it, has decided to seek the status of principal Opposition Party in the Legislative Assembly by submitting a letter to Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Saturday.
According to sources, the BJP is keen on getting that status soon as the party believes that it would strengthen its efforts to project itself as an alternative to the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
In about two days, Mr. Yeddyurappa is expected to get the primary membership of the BJP at the party State headquarters. With this, the party would have completed a formality.
Though Mr. Yeddyurappa’s supporters are particular about holding a rally in Davangere to mark his re-entry, the sources said that the issue was yet to come up for discussion. “We are not ruling out such a rally. But various issues, including the dates, are yet to be formally discussed. These are the things which would be taken up for discussion after his formal entry,” the sources said. They indicated that the rally was unlikely to be held before January 20 as the party national executive committee meeting is starting on January 18.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yeddyurappa had a meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s veteran leader M.C. Jayadev on Friday.
