Senior leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticised the city police for not being able arrest miscreants and control the law and order situation in the city on Sunday evening.

The anti-social elements and miscreants instigated and indulged in violence on different occasions, shouted anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans in Badkal galli on the occasion of the holy “Eid Milad Un-Nabi” celebrations in the city on Sunday. The leaders demanded stringent action against the miscreants.

Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore, Lok Sabha member Suresh C. Amgadi, Sanjay Patil, MLA, Councillor Deepak Jamkhandi and others staged angry protest in front of Police Commissioner, S. Ravi’s office here on Monday blaming police for not taking any action against the miscreants which resorted to violence and sparked off communal disturbances on various occasions.

Failure to take any action only encouraged them to flare up more trouble, even to the extent of shouting slogans against India and in favour of Pakistan, they said.

Mr. Kore told the Commissioner that they were forced to take to streets and stage protest as it was “intolerable” to witness anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogan shouting with in India. Any further lapse in taking appropriate action against such miscreants would only resulted in more such incident and harm peace and communal harmony in the city and also threaten law & order, they warned.

Mr. Ravi, however, convinced them to discuss the matter in his chamber and sought time till evening to arrest majority of the miscreants by evening.

Later, Mr. Ravi told media persons that there were nearly 50 persons in the motorbike-autorickshaw procession taken out in Badkal galli yesterday. So far nine persons were arrested, including four yesterday night. The CCTV footage were being watched to identify the culprits, who would be nabbed by today evening.

He said cases under Sections 143, 145, 147, 491, 53(A), and 188 of IPC would be registered against the accused. The police, depending upon the outcome of the investigations, would consider registering cases under Section 123(A) of IPC against the accused.
