Farmers protesting against the Centre’s directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu found support in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) Bharatiya Janata Party councillors.
Several councillors, led by Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy, on Monday took out a procession from the Kempe Gowda statue in front of the BBMP head office to Cauvery Bhavan, where they staged a demonstration. Demanding that the direction to release water to Tamil Nadu be revoked, the councillors said that the award was unscientific.
On Tuesday, a delegation of BJP councillors will meet Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to submit the resolution adopted in the BBMP Council against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The BJP councillor’s march comes after agitators in Mandya threatened to block water supply to Bangalore in protest against the lukewarm response of residents in Bangalore to the ongoing agitation.
Vatal’s protest
Kannada Chaluvali Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj on Monday held a protest on the Kempegowda Bus stand premises to observe “black Day” to protest against the Centre’s directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
Accompanied by Kannada Rakshana Vedike members and Dr. Rajkumar Fans Association, Mr. Nagaraj urged the State government not to bow to the Union government’s pressure and said that he would lay siege to Raj Bhavan on October 1 to press his demands.
In the meanwhile, Advocates’ Association, Bangalore, on Monday passed a resolution in support of the ongoing agitation of farmers in Mandya against the Centre’s direction to release water to Tamil Nadu.
