An ex-serviceman allegedly tried to rape an eight-year-old girl at Maidanahalli in Madhugiri taluk in Tumkur district on Sunday.

The police said that the accused, Narayanappa (40), had retired from the Border Security Force. The victim is a third standard student.

The accused lured the girl with biscuits around 4 p.m. and took her to his house, the police said. There was nobody in the house when the accused, the police said, tried to rape her. The police said that the girl screamed for help and the accused fled, the police added.

The girl complained to her mother who brought her to Madhugiri taluk government hospital. The doctors told the parents to lodge a complaint against Narayanappa.

A case was registered at Kodigenahalli police station on Monday.
