Bhyrappa tears into Opposition unity; bats for Modi

A vocal supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noted novelist S.L. Bhyrappa on Friday favoured Mr. Modi returning to power not only in 2019, but also in subsequent polls.

Speaking to reporters after receiving a copy of the ‘Achievements of the BJP Government at the Centre’ from Pratap Simha, Mysuru Lok Sabha MP, here, Mr. Bhyrappa was full of praise for the Prime Minister.

He criticised the coming together of Opposition parties with the “negative” objective of defeating Mr. Modi. “Even if you defeat Mr. Modi, what will you do next? There is no answer [from the Opposition parties],” Mr. Bhyrappa said, while sounding a note of caution that the country will not progress in the absence of a development agenda by the Opposition parties.

He dismissed a question on Mr. Modi’s inability to bring back black money stashed away in tax-free havens abroad by stating that the Prime Minister’s measures had “at least plugged the flow of money to Swiss banks”.

A Saraswathi Samman recipient, Mr. Bhyrappa had been appointed National Research Professor by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2015.
