The Karnataka government on Saturday appointed G. Bhavani Singh as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) for the disproportionate assets case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and other accused.

Fifty-nine-year-old Singh replaces B.V. Acharya, who put in his papers in August 2012 stating that he had suffered at the hands of “interested parties” who wanted him to quit.

However, his resignation was accepted only on January 17, 2013.

Mr. Bhavani Singh has 38 years of experience as an advocate practicing on criminal side.

He was an Additional Government Pleader (Criminal cases) and Additional State Public Prosecutor from 1999 to 2004.

He was serving as State Public Prosecutor-II since 2004 and gave up this post on Friday after the Karnataka Government, in consultation with the acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, which decided to appoint him as the SPP in the disproportionate assets case.
