Bharatiya Mahila Bank Ltd’s 50th branch in the country was inaugurated in Mysuru on Monday.
The bank’s Mysuru branch, which has a staff-strength of five officers including three women, seeks to tap the economic potential of women for the growth of the country by offering many women-centric products, said the Bank's Chairman and Managing Director Usha Ananthasubramanian.
Director of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) S.R. Savithri inaugurated the branch and hoped it will help realise the entrepreneurial ambitions of many women, which remains unfulfilled due to non-availability of financial resources.
Speaking to The Hindu on the occasion, Ms. Usha Ananthasubramanian said the bank, which is wholly owned by Government of India, had opened a total of about 1.5 lakh accounts in the country since the bank came into being in November 2013. About 80 per cent of the accounts were opened by women, she added.
To a question, she said the bank had forwarded loans amounting to Rs. 350 crore and about 60 per cent of the beneficiaries were women.
With the opening of a branch in Mysuru, Bharatiya Mahila Bank will have three branches in Karnataka. The other branches in the State are located in Bengaluru and Mangaluru.
