Lakshman Hogebandi of Bengaluru took home a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and silver lamps weighing 2 kg, here on Sunday.

The reason: he milked the highest quantity of milk (43.3 kg) at the annual State-level cow milking competition conducted by the Gopalakara Sangha, Mysuru, with support from the Department of Animal Husbandry.

The event was organised in memory of late actor Toogudeepa Srinivas, the father of actor Darshan Toogudeepa. Mr. Darshan gave away prizes to the winners at J.K. Grounds.

Of the 26 entries for the contest, 17 were shortlisted for the final round, which was held in two sessions – morning and evening. The participants, mostly from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya and Hassan, had brought their cows for the competition.

The fourth and fifth prizes were bagged by C. Chowdappa of Padarayanapura in Bengaluru and Jagan Reddy of Nirmal Milk Supply, Bengaluru, for milking 39.8 kg and 37.9 kg respectively.

Mysore City Corporation Councillor D. Nagabhushan; former Mayor Dhruvakumar; Devadas, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry; and veterinary officer Nagaraj were present.

Dr. Nagaraj told The Hindu that the event had been held to encourage milkmen. About 25 staff members of the Department of Animal Husbandry gave technical support to the event. “Our department gave technical support by checking the health of the cows, measuring milk and analysing results. Most of the cows that took part in the event were of the Holstein Friesians breed,” he said.
