Mangalore University has proposed to develop Belapu village in Udupi district as an academic township by having its proposed post-graduate centre and the State government’s proposed advanced research centre together at one place.

A committee set up by the university’s Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa to conceptualise this township will meet on the university campus for two days from Wednesday to prepare a comprehensive proposal.

The proposal would be submitted to the State government on Friday, according to P.S. Yadapadithaya, Registrar (administration) of the university.

The committee is headed by bio-technologist Arjula Ramachandra Reddy, a former Vice-Chancellor, Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa.

Of the 24.86 acres sanctioned to the university in the village for setting up the post-graduate centre, the government has handed over 20 acres to the university.

Mr. Yadapadithaya said that the vice-chancellor is thinking of setting up the township on the lines of such townships in Chukuba in Japan, and Novosibirsk, Siberia. If the post-graduate centre and the research centre came up at one place, it would help both students and researchers.

The proposal would deal specifically on funds requirement, facilities such as laboratories, hostels, administrative buildings, bank and other offices that would come up there. The university might need more land for the purpose, he said.
