Technical examination of electronic voting machines (EVMs) brought to Hassan for the Lok Sabha polls began on Sunday. Experts from Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), which manufactures EVMs, have arrived in Hassan to examine them.
As many as 2,780 ballot units and 2,180 control units have been provided for the polls in Hassan. The EVMs are stored in the Government Engineering College in Hassan. The technical evaluation began in the presence of Deputy Commissioner V. Anbukkumar, who is also the Returning Officer. He said BEL had sent six experts to examine EVMs.
They would examine all units and certify if the EVMs were fit for use in the election. The process would take six days.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, upgraded EVMs are being used for this year’s polls.
These new models have improved security facilities.
Sunday was the last day to enrol in the voters’ list. Hundreds of people, particularly youth, were seen at booth-level offices and the tahisldar’s office here to enrol. The Hassan administration had also conducted a campaign to encourage the youth to exercise their franchise.
