Bear attack leaves one dead, one injured

A person died and another was injured in a bear attack at Hiresadaraahalli near Banavara in Arasikere taluk on Tuesday morning.

Shekharappa (60) and Kalappa (70) of Hiresadarahalli were attacked. Shekharappa succumbed to injuries and died on the spot, while Kalappa is being treated at a government hospital in Arasikere.

Ganesh S. Bhat, Deputy Conservator of Forests, told The Hindu that the incident happened around 9.30 a.m. when both of them were in a coconut farm. The place of the incident was very close to the village. Shekharappa must have died of serious injuries in his head portion and legs. The post-mortem would be conducted to know the exact reason for his death.

Shekharappa is survived by his wife and two children. The department handed over a cheque of Rs. 2 lakh to his family members. The department pays Rs. 5 lakh to the families of those killed by wild animals. Residents of Hiresadarahalli and surrounding villages demanded the Forest Department to capture the bears.

Mr. Bhat said a team of his staff had been deployed in the village to drive bear back to forests.
