Even as the Division Bench of the High Court of Karnataka on Friday gave more time for the State government to hold elections to the BBMP, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (S) have asserted that there would be no change in their stand that the BBMP trifurcation Bill should be referred to a select committee.
BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok told The Hindu that the party MLCs would press on with this demand in the Legislative Council on Monday. “The High Court verdict on the BBMP polls and the trifurcation of BBMP are two different issues. We are totally against trifurcation and will continue to resist the government’s moves in this regard,” he said.
JD(S) State president H.D. Kumaraswamy too said the party would press for referring the Bill to the select committee. The High Court’s order was “expected” and the party would hold a meeting of its Bengaluru city leaders to chalk out a campaign against the government, he said.
