The century-old University of Mysore, one of the prestigious universities in the country, got another acting Vice-Chancellor on Thursday with a regular VC still eluding the centre of higher learning.

C. Basavaraju, Dean, Law Faculty, on Thursday assumed charge as the acting Vice-Chancellor with the incumbent Prof. Dayananda Mane attaining superannuation.

Prof. Basavaraju is the third acting VC appointed within this year after Prof. K.S. Rangappa demitted office in January. Before Prof. Mane, Prof. Yashwanth Dongre had served as the acting VC.

This is perhaps for the first time in recent years that the university is headed by three acting VCs within a year.

Besides Prof. Basavaraju, the name of Prof. T.K. Umesh, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, was recommended for the acting VC’s post, it is learnt. In the end, Prof. Basavaraju, who earlier served as the Registrar of University of Mysore, was chosen.

The undue delay in appointing a regular VC to the university has triggered a debate here with a few other State universities also being run by acting VCs.
