The strike called by the United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU) evoked a good response in Raichur on Tuesday as banking operations came to a standstill.

Bank employees of all the nationalised remained off duty to participate in the strike. People, who were unaware of the strike and visited the banks for work had to face inconvenience.

Agitating employees gathered at Canara Bank premises near Chandramouleshwara Temple and staged a demonstration. Addressing the employees, various union leaders condemned the Union Government for its “rigid anti-worker stance”.

“We have organised several strikes in the last two years putting forth our demands. The Union Government has deliberately ignored our agitation,” said an employee.

Their demands included 25 percent hike in the wages, reducing working days to five days a week, dropping the proposal of merging nationalised banks and not outsourcing general and regular banking tasks.

Union leaders Harish Koppar, Raghavendra Rao, Venkatesh, Vijayalakshmi, P.C. Suprahmanya, Ashok Hegde and others were present.
