The city’s Regional Transport Officers (RTO) will soon set an example to the people by adopting an eco-friendly mode of transport. All the ten RTOs in the city will travel across Bangalore in a battery operated vehicle as a step to reduce the burden of air pollution.

Speaking after the World Earth Day celebrations here on Tuesday, Transport Commissioner K. Amarnarayana said the Transport Department would hire electric cars for all the RTOs on a monthly basis.

“The RTOs would lead the way in promoting an eco-friendly mode of transport by using these cars from next month,” he said.

Mr. Amarnarayana, a recipient of the State special award for his efforts in ecological conservation, has been using an electric vehicle since the past few weeks. The car has a seating capacity of four people including the driver. .

The Commissioner also said there was a need for citizens to minimize the use of petrol and diesel thereby helping to reduce air pollution levels.

“The electric car will help save fuel and be economical as well,” he said, adding that there was a proposal to set up four charging stations in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha to encourage the use of electric vehicles .
