A district-level convention organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Sunday demanded a ban on “made snana” at Kukke Subrahmanya temple and “pankthi bheda” at the Sri Krishna temple in Udupi.

Inaugurating the convention, Komu Souharda Vedike convener S.Y. Gurushanth termed these rituals, which are being followed in the name of religion and devotion, as unscientific. He said that they wet against the spirit of the Constitution.

The government should accord priority to prohibiting such anti-human rituals in the proposed anti-superstition law, he urged. A widespread campaign to create awareness among people against such belief should be carried out at the same time, he said.

“Made snana”, “pankthi bheda” and such other rituals are tools to continue with the caste system, while they undermine human dignity, Mr. Gurushanth said.

CPI(M) district unit secretary Gandhinagar Narayanaswamy presided over the convention.

Dalit Sangharsh Samiti leaders Pandit Munivenkatappa, T. Vijaykumar, Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane State unit president V. Geetha and Samajika Parivarthane Janandolana president Aipalli Narayanaswamy spoke.
