Netravathi Chavan, 14, from Bagalkot district in Karnataka, who had rescued a boy who was drowning, but lost her life while trying to save another, has been honoured posthumously with the Geeta Chopra award for bravery.

A native of Hosuru village near Ilakal of Bagalkot district, Netravathi was washing clothes in a pond adjoining a stone quarry, when she noticed two of her cousins, who were swimming in the pond, in difficulty. She immediately jumped into the pond to save them.

While she managed to rescue 12-year-old Muthu, she could not save 10-year-old Ganesh and herself.

The incident took place on May 13, 2017. Her family has since migrated to Udupi district. Illegal stone quarrying used to take place in the village and it was stopped in 2014 and subsequently a pond was created.

Karnataka has already honoured the braveheart with the Keladi Chennamma Bravery award posthumously.
