Bagair Hukum farmers to stage dharna in Bangalore

November 06, 2013 02:14 pm | Updated 02:14 pm IST - Bangalore:

Farmers and landless labourers from Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts will hold a two-day dharna at Bannappa Park here on November 7 and 8 to protest against the acquisition of agricultural land and to demand regularisation of bagair hukum cultivation.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Ashok Kumar H.M. and N. Venkatachalaiah of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) said that agricultural land around Bangalore had been acquired by the Bangalore Development Authority, the Karnataka Housing Board and the Bangalore International Airport Limited without the land losers being duly compensated.

Rejected

They also said that applications for regularisation by bagair hukum farmers who have been cultivating for nearly 50 years on the land concerned had been rejected on the ground that the land falls within 18 kilometre radius of the city.

“On the other hand, the government has no qualms in giving large tracts of land to corporates and real estate developers at throwaway prices or free,” Mr. Kumar alleged.
