The D. Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Forum has urged the backward classes and communities to mention their original caste during the caste-based census, which would soon be commencing across the State shortly.

The Forum convened a meeting at Gandhi Bhavan here on Thursday to discuss about various aspects of the census. Leaders and members of several backward communities participated in the meeting.

They praised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for ordering the census to uplift Dalits, backwards and other downtrodden communities.

The objective of the caste-wise census is to understand the social, educational and financial status of people. The proposed census would help bring equality among different castes besides providing social justice. Hence, people from the backward classes should cooperate with enumerators during the census by mentioning their original castes in column of the enumeration chart, they said.

Mentioning the original castes would help the State government to frame specific policies for the welfare of the backward communities, they added.
