A red alert has been sounded in the State’s districts bordering Kerala owing to an outbreak of avian influenza in a few districts in Kerala. A large number of ducks were reported to have died in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam district of Kerala.

A team of veterinarians have been deputed to border districts to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Surveillance has been stepped up in border village areas. Byre Gowda, director, Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals (IAH&VB), Bengaluru, has been appointed as nodal officer to monitor the situation.

Minister for Animal Husbandry T.B. Jayachandra on Tuesday chaired a meeting with department officials and veterinarians. He said that surveillance had been stepped up in Mysuru, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar and Dakshina Kannada district.

No case of avian influenza has been reported in the State so far. Forest officials have been instructed to report to the IAH&VB any case bird deaths. Movement of vehicles between Kerala and Karnataka will be monitored at check-posts, the Minister said.
