As per the Hindu calendar, Friday – April 20 – marked Vaishakha Shuddha Panchami. The day was considered to be auspicious by several politicians and saw a large number of nominations being filed across the district.
As many as 33 candidates, Independents and party representatives filed nominations before returning officers.
The day also marked Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti.
Among those who filed nominations in the border district were former Ministers Lakshman Savadi and Umesh Katti; Duryodhan Aihole, MLA, and his son Arun; Bharamagouda (Raju) Kage, Anand Mamani and Vishwanth Patil, MLAs; and former MLA Abhay Kumar Patil, all from BJP.
Congress leaders like district in-charge Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi; Mahantesh Koujalagi, former MLA; KPCC Women’s Wing president Laxmi Hebbalkar; and Bal Bhavan president Anjali Nimbalkar, also filed nominations.
