Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology B. Ramanath Rai on Friday said the government has plans to get at least eight crore tree saplings planted across the State this monsoon season.

He was speaking after launching the “Koti Vriksha” campaign of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) here by planting a tree sapling. Mr. Rai said the government is concerned over global warming and depleting green cover. Hence, planting of saplings is being undertaken on a war footing and the department would be organising programmes across the State for this purpose, he said.

The MCC has identified several stretches of roads in its limits to plant way-side tree saplings during the monsoon.

Mayor Harinath, Deputy Mayor Sumithra Kariya, Mangaluru South MLA J.R. Lobo, MLC Ganesh Karnik and others were present.

Students from neighbouring schools attended the programme and some of them were given the opportunity to plant saplings.
