Assessment criteria upsets MLAs

Several MLAs, cutting across party affiliations, on Tuesday took exception to the trend of research organisations trying to judge legislators’ performance based on the number of questions asked by them in the Assembly.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Assembly, Karnataka Janata Paksha member B.R. Patil alleged that there were discrepancies in the representation of facts in a similar study on the performance of MLAs conducted recently by a research organisation. He alleged that based on the organisation’s report, the media had portrayed some MLAs who had not got enough opportunities to ask questions as “underperformers”.

Janata Dal (Secular) floor leader H.D. Kumaraswamy endorsed his views and maintained that it would not be correct to judge the performance of a legislator merely by the number of questions asked by him on the floor of the House.

Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa said he would direct officials of the Assembly Secretariat to verify if the the research organisation’s report had any discrepancies. “If there are discrepancies, I will not hesitate to initiate action against them,” he said.
