Membership drive to be held from September 9 to 16

Setting its eyes on the next Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has set a target of enrolling 50 lakh members during the weeklong membership drive in September.

A decision to this effect was taken at two separate meetings in Bangalore on Monday. State office-bearers of the BJP, district-level leaders and representatives from various frontal organisations participated in the meetings.Though the membership drive from September 9 to 16 being launched as part of the party’s national-level organisational elections, the target set for enrolment of members has aroused curiosity in the political circles as it has come at a time when it is being speculated that the BJP might opt for an early poll. The party is will hold hold district and taluk-level workshops for its workers on the ways and means of achieving the target. Briefing reporters after the meetings, party State vice-president and MP Prahlad Joshi said district-level workshops will be held from August 28 to 29 and taluk-level workshops will be held from September 3 to 4. He said it is intended to enrol a minimum of 50 members in every polling booth.

The BJP has also lined up a series of organisational activities. This includes the party State executive on September 8 in Bangalore; State executive of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Murudeshwar from August 24 to 25; and the State executive of the Yuva Morcha in Belgaum from August 25 to 26. The BJP State Raitha Morcha will stage a Statewide protest on August 27 against increase in prices of fertilizers.
