Around 50 top doctors in the race for RGUHS V-C post

State government sets up three-member search committee

With the three-year term of the Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) having come to an end early this month, the State government is on the lookout for a new Vice-Chancellor.

The government has set up a three-member search panel headed by B.G. Mulimani, Vice-Chancellor of BLDE University, Vijayapura. Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat Technological University Navin Sheth and Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University of Health Sciences M.K.C. Nair are the other members.

The Additional Chief Secretary (Medical Education) has been nominated as the convenor of the search committee. The committee will shortlist and suggest three names to the Governor, who is likely to select the Vice-Chancellor by the third week of August.

According to sources, nearly 50 top doctors are in the fray for the plum post and more applications are being filed every day. The last date to file applications is August 2.

S. Sacchidanand, Director-cum-Dean of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, who was earlier Registrar (Evaluation) at RGUHS; K.B. Linge Gowda, Director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology; B.C. Bhagwan, Professor of Surgery at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences; and S.S. Harasoor, former Director, Medical Education, have emerged as front runners for the post.

The other contenders include M.K. Ramesh, present RGUHS Registrar and acting V-C; B. Krishnamurthy, Director, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute; Shashidhar Buggi, Director, SDS TB and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases; and Prithviraj D.R., Director, Government Dental College and Research Institute, among others.

According to a top official, senior professors, medical superintendents and directors of various medical institutions are eyeing the post.
