Nine-year-old Amith keeps a watch on his mobile phone anxiously waiting for a call from the Indian Army. His father, Subedar T.T. Nagesh (42), who was posted at Siachen, is one among the 10 who have gone missing after an avalanche struck the glacier on Wednesday.

Members of his family and relatives at Tejuru village, near here, have been on tenterhooks ever since they received the call about Subedar Nagesh going missing. They are all hanging on the hope of getting a message that he is safe.

Though the Indian Army has declared them dead, the family members have not yet been conveyed the message. All that they have been informed is that Subedar Nagesh has been trapped in snow after the avalanche. “We received the call around 12 noon on Thursday,” said the soldier’s brother-in-law, Annappa.

Since then, Subedar Nagesh’s wife, Asha, and their sons, Amith and Preetham (5), have been anxious.

“We don’t know whether he is dead or alive. All that we have been told is that he is missing, and efforts are on to find him,” said Mr. Annappa.

Subedar Nagesh has been in the Army for 22 years. Six months ago, he had visited the village. The last time he called his family, he had informed them about the camp in Siachen.
