Anganwadi workers from different parts of the city and Belgaum taluk, on Friday, took out a procession and staged a demonstration at Rani Chennamma Circle in support of their demands, including minimum wage of Rs. 10,000 a month.
The procession was organised as part of Karnataka Rajya Anganwadi Naukara Sangha’s Statewide programme. In Belgaum, the procession was organised by the sangha’s Belgaum taluk unit, headed by Sandhya G. Kulkarni.
Ms. Kulkarni said anganwadi workers were struggling to survive as their wages had remained meagre but the prices of essential commodities had spiralled, especially in the last five years. The government should pay them at least Rs. 10,000 a month, she said.
Other major demands of the sangha included recognition of anganwadi workers as government employees, payment of wages in the first week of every month and payment of rent for buildings in which anganwadis were being run, she said.
