December 30, 2014 12:33 pm | Updated 12:33 pm IST - Shivamogga:

The State government has renamed the Government High School in Tirthahalli town after Jnanpith Award winner the late U.R. Ananthamurthy.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony here on Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Rs. 75 lakh will be released for the development of the school.

Ananthamurthy spent his formative years in Tirthahalli taluk. The government school, where he studied, will henceforth be called Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy Government High School. The State government will upgrade basic amenities and construct a new building and library here, he said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said Ananthamurthy believed in democracy and social justice. To proliferate the liberal values advocated by him, the government will establish a study centre in his name in Tirthahalli taluk, he said. Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar, and Ananthamurthy’s wife Esther Ananthamurthy were present.
