The ongoing book exhibition of Navakarnataka Publications to mark the silver jubilee of its Mysore branch has seen good response from the public, highlighting the continuing patronage for books even in the digital age.

There were concerns over the decline in reading habits but demand for books seems to be strong among people of all age groups, according to Satyanarayana, manager of the publication’s group in Mysore.

One lakh books

He said that there were over one lakh titles and a hefty discount ranging from 20 per cent to 80 per cent. More than 50,000 of these books have a discount of over 50 per cent, he said.

“It is true that regular sales in bookshops have declined in the recent years owing to the present trend of buying books online and the growth of e-commerce. But there is always good response to book exhibitions and sales zoom given the plethora of choice available for customers,” said Mr. Satyanarayana.

Wide genres

The exhibition, being held at the Institution of Engineers, offers books of under various genres ranging from science fiction to pure science, encyclopaedia to dictionaries, literature in Kannada and English, year books, subject books, self-help books, children’s books, fiction, current affairs, history, geography, philosophy, mathematics, computer science to name a few. In all, there are books worth Rs. 40 lakh on display and the exhibition will be on till August 10 from 9.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.
