Members of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) have urged the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to direct the Gulbarga City Corporation to provide basic amenities, including potable drinking water and underground drainage system, in the >Khaja Banda Nawaz Dargah locality .

Social worker and RTI activist Shaik Shafi Ahmed, representing the APCR, submitted a complaint in this regard to the member of the SHRC C.G. Hungund in Gulbarga on Tuesday. Mr. Ahmed said that the residents of Gadikhana locality in the Khaja Banda Nawaz Dargah area were the worst-affected. Mr. Ahmed said that the Gulbarga City Corporation had failed in its duty to provide basic amenities to the residents of the Khaja Banda Nawaz Dargah area, thus violating their human rights.

The area does not have underground sewerage, so sewage is let to flow into open drains thus affecting the health of residents. And, garbage dumped in the drains chokes them on a daily basis.

The residents have been requesting the authorities concerned to address the issues, and provide them basic amenities for the past three years. But all their pleas have gone in vain.

Plea to SHRC

Mr. Ahmed sought the intervention of the SHRC to stop dumping of solid waste into the tank opposite KBN Dargah opposite Faraan School on Dargah Road. It was a percolation tank that helped recharge borewells in the surrounding areas. So, the SHRC should direct the Gulbarga City Corporation to clear the silt, and restore the tank to its old glory.
