Each one of the districts will have an all-woman police station by the end of the next financial year (2015-16), Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told the Legislative Council on Thursday. Intervening during the reply of Home Minister K.J. George to Bharatiya Janata Party member Siddaraju during Question Hour, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the State has 10 such police stations now.
Of the 20 new police stations mentioned in this budget, 10 would be all-woman police stations. The other 10 will be set up by the end of next financial year, he said.
The Home Minister said that all-woman police stations are located in Bangalore (two stations), Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, Kundapura, Gulbarga, Davangere and Shimoga.
ComplaintsThese police stations received 955 complaints in 2012 and 1,326 in 2013, he said. The statistics furnished by him showed that Mangalore topped the list with the highest complaints of 212 in 2012 and 305 in 2013. This was followed by Ulsoor Gate police station in Bangalore that received 143 complaints in 2012 and 248 in 2013.
Kundapura had the least number of complaints of 39 in 2012, while the Belgaum police station reported the lowest complaints of 41 in 2013. In all, the stations had solved 904 cases in 2012 and 949 cases in 2013, he said.
Dowry casesIn his written reply to a query, Mr. George revealed that dowry harassment cases had seen an increase in Bangalore and Bangalore Urban district in the last three years.
In Bangalore, dowry harassment cases which stood at 605 in 2011 had gone up to 633 in 2012 and 821 in 2013. Bangalore Urban district reported 44 such cases in 2011, 41 in 2012 and 60 in 2013.
He said that the Police Department was working towards creating a beat system dedicated to women’s security to be handled by exclusive staff in each one of the police stations.
