A. Manju, minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture, expressed disappointment over how untouchability is still being practised in many places even in this age. “It hurts me whenever I come across discrimination of human beings on the basis of caste,” he said after inaugurating Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations on Thursday.

The first thing every individual needs to understand is that all human beings are equal, he said. “Many social reformers have worked towards making people understand the fact that people are equal. However, there are many who still do not understand this,” he said. Further, Ambedkar has been recognised all over the world for his contribution to humanity, added Mr. Manju. “I am a minister now and have got a chance to work for the people only because of the Constitution that Ambedkar gave this country,” he said.

Dr. Jagriti Deshmane, a reader in Agriculture University in Raichur, said that the Constitution contributed by Dr. Ambedkar had not been implemented completely in the country.

Need for reservation

“Many speak about the scrapping of reservation for downtrodden sections. So far only a few people have been benefited by reservation. The reservation policy should continue as long as caste-based discrimination continues in this country,” she said.

Hassan MLA H.S. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner Umesh H. Kusugal, Superintendent of Police R.K. Shahapurwad and other officers were present.

Celebratory mood

Earlier in the day, people’s representatives and officers garlanded the statue of Dr. Ambedkar in the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises.

It was followed by a procession from the DC’s office to Hasanamba Kalakshetra. A number of folk troupes participated in the procession.
