The work to provide Internet connection at all gram panchayats (GPs), under the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), is progressing at brisk pace. In all probability, over 355 GPs in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts will be provided with Internet within 45 days.
Nagaraj Gupta, Deputy General Manager, Mysuru District Telecom, told The Hindu that the cable was being laid in all GPs in both districts and the work is expected to complete in another month. Optical cables are being laid in over 400 km in the two districts, he said.
Explaining the NOFN, Mr. Gupta said it was part of the Digital India initiative of the Government of India and was envisaged to integrate government departments and the public to ensure effective governance.
He said it also aimed at ensuring that the government services were made available to citizens electronically by reducing paperwork. More importantly, it was an initiative to connect rural areas under high-speed Internet networks.
He claimed that this was the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity project through optical fibre. A minimum 100 mbps bandwidth will be provided at each GP, he said. Once the connectivity was given, it will be easy to track the progress of any GP.
Mr. Gupta said distribution of ration cards, Aadhar and various other works could be carried out electronically.
