Members of All India Agriculture Workers Union (AIAWU) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mandya on Tuesday seeking early payment of their wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Agriculture workers from different parts of the city participated in the demonstration.

According to the agitators, the villagers in the district were not getting employment under the scheme regularly. Also, there were instances where the workers had not received payment for several months.

Besides, the authorities concerned have failed to identify a huge number of eligible job seekers for the scheme in the district, they alleged.

The protestors alleged that the contractors were using machineries at different parts in Mandya while implementing the schemes. They urged the district administration to take immediate action to implement the job scheme properly.
