The Chimmalagi lift irrigation project, a long-pending project, is now heading towards its completion as the work is underway on a war footing.
The project, which aims at irrigating 2.15 lakh acres of land of Muddebihal, Sindgi, Basavanabagewadi, Indi taluks of Vijayapura district and Surpur taluk of Yadgir district, is reaching its final destination.
The project requires around 25,789 tmcft of water to be drawn from the Almatti right bank canal to lift the water.
During the visit to the site on Friday by the presspersons, it was found that the work is progressing rapidly.
The work includes construction of canals, laying of concrete, construction of over bridges.
“We are trying to complete the entire project by March, 2017 to make sure that the water reaches the farmers,” said officials of the Krishna Bhagya Jal Nigam Limited, which comes under the Ministry of Water Resources, headed by M.B. Patil.
The officials said that thought the project was supposed to be completed by May, 2016 but got delayed due to a problem with land acquisition.Now, with this major hurdle cleared, the officials are implementing the project to meet the deadline.
The officials said that already eight 2300 kW capacity motors have been installed to lift the water. A 110 kW station has been set up only for this purpose.
After the completion of canal work, these machines will start lifting the water, the officials claimed.
They claimed that of 326 works of the project, 147 are already over which makes it to 60 per cent of the total project.
The officials said that in the 87-kilometre canal line, some 22 tanks would also be filled using the same water which will provide irrigation facility to 167 villages to cover 2.15 lakh acres of land.
“With 22 tanks getting filled, the people of these area will not face water problem in the summer,” the officials claimed and added that the Mr. Patil was keen to get the project completed within the time frame.
