Advocate, educationist M.A. Sampath Iyengar passes away

Well-known advocate and educationist M.A. Sampath Iyengar passed away in the early hours of Friday.

Mr. Iyengar, who was associated with several institutions including National Institute of Engineering (NIE) as its President, was 97. He was ailing from lung infection for the past three days, sources said.

A resident of Lakshmipuram in Mysuru, Mr. Iyengar leaves behind his two sons – M.S. Ananthram, an industrialist in Bengaluru, and Dr. M.S. Ranganath, chief urologist at Vikram Hospital.

Mr. Iyengar, who also has three grandsons, celebrated the Kanakabhisheka in Bengaluru recently.

Mr. Iyengar was also felicitated by the Karnataka High Court for completing 50 years of practice as an advocate.

A law graduate from then Bombay University, he has been practicing since 1946. He was enrolled as Supreme Court advocate in 1963.

In a condolence message, Principal of NIE G.L. Shekhar said Mr Iyengar's contribution to NIE's growth into a premier engineering college in the State was immense. "He was a towering personality and a great intellect Dr. Shekar said. The Board of Management, Principal and the staff of the NIE Group of Institutions are in deep sorrow over the sudden demise of its Past President Sri Sampath Iyengar", said a statement from Mr Shekar's office.
