C.V. Sneha, Deputy Secretary, Mandya Zilla Panchayat, has requested liquor addicts to stop drinking liquor as alcoholism shattered their lives.

She was speaking after inaugurating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday.

Ms. Sneha explained the ill effects of addiction to alcohol and drugs. Once addicted, it will be difficult to come out of it. The addiction will destroy the moral values in society and the dignity of the addicted people. Hundreds of people had committed suicide, including some farmers, because of alcoholism, she said.

Felicitated

Some de-addicted people were honoured on the occasion. They received mementos, fruits and shawls from Ms. Sneha.

Mandya District AYUSH (Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy) officer Seethalakshmi, Women and Child Welfare Officer S. Diwakar, District Kannada Sahithya Parishat president C.K. Ravikumar and others were present.

Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and ‘Dhwani’, a non-governmental organisation, had organised the programme.
