Activists of various organisations, led by the Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane, have decided to lay siege to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, condemning the “failure” of the district administration to arrest the main accused in the July 10 murder of a young woman and her daughter in an alleged case of dowry harassment.
C.B. Veena (23) and two-year old Deepthi were allegedly killed by S.K. Santhoshkumar at his residence here.
The indefinite dharna demanding the arrest of the accused is in its fourth week. Protests were staged all over the district on September 5 in support of the demand. Home Minister K.J. George had also intervened and directed the authorities to take steps to nab the accused.
Ms. Veena’s relatives, including her father, Beerappa, and mother, Sunandamma, have been staging a sit-in dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office since August 21.
Mobilising support
Members of progressive outfits were mobilising people from across the district to participate in Wednesday’s agitation, JMS district unit secretary V. Geetha told The Hindu on Tuesday. Functionaries of CPI(M), CITU, SFI, DYFI, and DSS were likely to participate in the protest. A call for Kolar bandh would be given if the authorities failed to arrest Santhoshkumar who has been absconding, she said .
