‘Academy ready to provide syllabus in Urdu for PU colleges’

Azizulla Baig, chairman, Karnataka Urdu Academy, has said that the academy was ready to provide syllabus in Urdu for PU colleges, if any college was ready impart education in Urdu medium in the State.

He told The Hindu on the sidelines of a national seminar on ‘Role of Urdu in promotion of Unani system of medicines’ jointly organised by the Academy and Luqman Unani Medical College here on Thursday.

He said that the academy would also write to Pre-University Board of the State in this regard.

“Not merely for a particular college, but the academy would help in preparing the syllabus for the Board itself the Government seek our help,” he said.

Mr. Baig however said that it was the responsibility of college authorities to show interest in giving PU education in Urdu. “Without their support, neither the government nor the Academy would do anything in that,” he said.

Mr. Baig said that Urdu could be saved for future generation either by making medium of instruction in Urdu or teaching the language as a subject in the schools.

Earlier, addressing the seminar he said that with an objective to popularise Urdu at an elementary level, the academy launched a pilot project in Bengaluru where pre-primary school was started in one other Urdu primary schools.

“The response of encouraging that many parents began getting their children in the same primary school after completing pre-primary in the same school. Starting of pre-primary school acted like a bridge for the students,” he said and added that from this year, the academy planned to extend the project in all districts of the State.

Makbul Bagwan, MLA, said that under Chief Minister’s Multi-sector Development Programme for the development of Urdu schools in the State, the government had granted Rs. 2 crore to Vijayapura district for providing better infrastructure to the Urdu schools. He said that the quality of education in Urdu schools needed to be enhanced for attracting more students. On the occasion, the academy feted seven top-ranked students of Luqman Unani Medical College in the State announced by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.
