April 08, 2014 01:22 pm | Updated May 21, 2016 09:28 am IST - BANGALORE:

Technical experts as well as Kannada film director T.S. Nagabharana have said the Aadhaar programme is plagued by multiple lapses and has no legal standing.

Speaking at a discussion organised by Citizens for Democracy here on Sunday, Mr. Nagabharana claimed the Aadhaar number was totally irrelevant.

Kiran Bettadpur, CEO, Cylive Soft, said the UIDAI was not a statutory body and it was set up by an executive order. The scheme was being implemented by the UIDAI in violation of Constitutional provisions and the body, till recently, was headed by Nandan Nilekani. Mr. Nilekani was now contesting the Lok Sabha elections as Congress candidate from Bangalore South constituency. V. K. Somashekar of the Grahaka Shakti said the numbers issued by the UIDAI, with financial support from the UPA government, would not prevent siphoning of subsidy amount allocated for welfare schemes. Gopinath, professor, Computer Science Department, IISc., Bangalore; Shamasundar of ProSIM, R&D Centre, Bangalore, and Sampath Iyengar, former CEO, PSI Data Systems and Aditya Birla Software Group, also spoke and questioned the relevance of the programme.
