‘A third of speed bumps unscientific’

Only about 6,000 of the approximately 9,000 speed bumps in Karnataka are scientific, and the remaining will be removed within three months, Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa has promised.

In reply to a query by Congress MLC Veerakumar Appaso Patil in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, the Minister admitted that there were 137 speed bumps on the Bangalore–Mysore highway alone, though there should be none according to the Indian Road Congress norms.

On measures taken to prevent accidents on highways, Mr. Mahadevappa said that cautionary boards were being installed at accident-prone locations on national highways. “Retro reflective paint is being done on both sides of the road, especially in accident zones,” he said.

Medians would be installed wherever necessary, speed bumps constructed on cross roads that connect to national highways, and junction improvement would be taken up, the Minister said.
