Mandya Karnataka 19_May_2017 : Residents of several low-lying areas had to spend a sleepless night following overnight torrential rains lashing Mandya from Thursday night to Friday morning.

Residents of many low-lying areas spent a sleepless night on Thursday as torrential rain lashed Mandya.

Heavy rain, which started around 9.45 p.m. and continued till 3 a.m. on Friday, left many areas flooded. Rainwater entered many houses on Gandhi Nagar III Cross. Beedhi Labourers Colony and surrounding areas of Halahalli too were badly affected.

According to officials, the flooding was the result of people blocking storm-water drains by dumping waste. The Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) will take steps to remove silt from the drains, T. N. Narasimha Murthy, Commissioner of the CMC.

Damage

According to residents of Gandhi Nagar, rainwater entered houses and damaged foodgrains and household articles. Residents worked till the early hours of Friday clearing water from houses using utensils and buckets.

Residents of Beedi Labourers Colony and Halahalli slum urged the CMC to improve the drainage system.

Meanwhile, the compound wall of the Department of Forest office collapsed in the incessant rain. There was also a traffic gridlock on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway for a while.
